June 17

A group headed by Norma McCorvey, better known as “Jane Roe” from the 1973 “Roe v. Wade” Supreme Court Case, requested that the decision making abortion legal for women be set aside. During a story on the Fox News program Special Report With Brit Hume, a representative from Planned Parenthood said of this case that it was just another attempt by abortion opponents to strip women of their “fundamental right to choose.” This rant is not going to be another anti-abortion rant. (If you want that, you can read my January 21 rant.) This will be a very preachy rant about choices. Very Preachy.

We all make choices on a daily basis. Some are minor choices, like “do I want the fries or the hash browns” at Perkins. Some are major choices, like “should I take that job in Boston or not?” Every choice we make has consequences. If you take that job in Boston, that could involve a costly move as well as putting you hundreds if not thousands of miles away from your closest friends and family. If you choose to have sex, you have to understand that there may be consequences. Ladies, you may become pregnant, you may get a disease. Guys, you may get someone pregnant, you make get a disease. Be prepared to deal with these consequences. Don’t complain to me about that Chlamydia that you have. You brought it on yourself with your own behavior. Don’t complain to me about that hard life you’ve led because you made a choice one night and wound up nine months later with a small human life to take care of or because you have to pay child support to some girl you just wanted to have a “good time” with. If you choose to drink and drive, you may get killed, you may kill someone else. I will not cry for you if you wind up in prison for the rest of your life because you made a stupid choice and killed someone in an accident because you were drunk. If you do drugs with a dirty needle and get AIDS, I will not have any sympathy for you. You know that there can be negative consequences to your stupid behavior, so don’t come begging me for help in paying your prescription drug bills. In the case of abortion, does the choice come once a life has formed, or does it come when you make the choice of whether or not to have sex? I am pro-choice, but my idea of choice comes at a different time than an abortion supporter’s time frame of choice.

We all make choices and some of those choices become mistakes. We have a problem in this world by looking for a scapegoat every time something doesn’t go perfectly for us. As a people, we need to understand that there are consequences to our actions. If you choose not to pay your car payment on time, you will loose your car. If you eat a lot of food that is bad for you, you will get fat. It’s not your genes, it’s because you eat too much and don’t exercise. Don’t make excuses, own up to your mistakes. Admit to your failings and move on. Life can be difficult, but if you can get beyond your shortcomings, you will lead a happy and prosperous life.
